A Brief Introduction to BMX and Cycling

They have high handlebars for the comfort of the riders as they accommodate an upright posture. Additionally, they have one fixed gear, wheels of 18-24 inches and are quite small compared to regular bikes.

BMX Races and Supercross

BMX races are usually organised by UCI BMX World Championship under the regulation of the Union Cycliste Internationale, which is the sport’s international governing body. The event is held annually for three days and the winner is crowned the BMX Cycling World Champion.Apart from BMX cycling, there is the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup which is an international BMX racing series. The racing series is held throughout the year in numerous locations. The winner is usually awarded a gold medal and a rainbow jersey.

Different Types of BMX Cycling

BMX forms of cycling are usually classified into two important classes: race and dirt jump bikes and freestyle bikes. Freestyle BMX is made mainly for stunts and tricks than racing. There also is a BMX jumper that is designed for aerial stunts and jumping.

Other types of BMX bikes include:

  • The Flatland BMX: Designed for stunts and tricks on a flat area of asphalt or concrete. Tricks performed include the dump truck, steamroller and hitchhiker.
  • Stunt Vert BMX: these are designed for a very dangerous and extreme form of bike riding.
